A stair runner transforms a staircase. It doesn't matter whether you have a grand Victorian hallway or a modern three-bedroom semi; the right runner, fitted properly, changes the entire feel of your home the moment you walk through the door.

And the answer is always stair runners.
Not because they're the easiest, they're not, but because when it's done properly, a bespoke stair runner is one of the most transformative things you can do to a home. It's the first thing guests notice, it's the thing your family touches every single day and when it's made from beautiful materials and fitted with precision, it lasts for decades.
We fit stair runners into all types of Staffordshire homes, grand period properties and Victorian terraces, converted barns and country houses, new builds and three-bedroom semis. The size of the property doesn't determine whether a stair runner is right for it. The staircase does. And every staircase deserves to look its best.

This is the part most people don't know, and Carl will tell you it's the single most important thing about getting a stair runner.
A staircase has to be measured before the carpet is cut and not estimated, not approximated, properly measured, tread by tread, riser by riser. Get it wrong at the measurement stage and the carpet won't sit right, the joins won't fall where they should, and the runner will look wrong, no matter how beautiful the material is.
If your staircase has winders, those triangular steps that turn a corner, they need to be templated individually.
Carl creates a precise paper template of every winder, then uses those templates to cut the carpet to the exact shape. The binding is then done on the job, not before, ensuring the edge finish perfectly matches the shape of each step.
This is why stair runners are a job for a specialist who has done hundreds of them, not a general carpet fitter who does one occasionally. Carl has been fitting stair runners across Staffordshire for over 10 years. The difference in the finished result is obvious.
Your staircase is the first thing people see when they walk into your home. A bespoke stair runner creates an immediate focal point, something that says this home has been thought about, cared for, and finished properly. Nothing else you can do to a staircase has the same visual impact for the investment.
A properly fitted runner dramatically reduces the risk of slips on wooden or tiled stairs, which is important for children, older family members, and pets. The cushioning underfoot also makes daily use of your stairs genuinely more comfortable.
Wooden stairs take enormous daily punishment. A quality stair runner absorbs that impact, preventing the scratches, scuffs, and wear that can make a beautiful staircase look tired within a few years. It's protection that also looks spectacular.
The sound of footsteps on bare wooden stairs travels throughout a house. A stair runner significantly absorbs that noise, making a real difference in multi-storey homes and open-plan layouts.
A well-chosen, professionally fitted stair runner is one of those finishing touches that makes a property stand out at the viewing stage. Estate agents notice it. Buyers notice it. It speaks to the quality of the whole house.

Wool is the premium choice for stair runners and for good reason. Naturally resilient, inherently stain-resistant, temperature-regulating, and with a warmth and depth of colour that synthetic fibres can't replicate. A wool stair runner ages beautifully, developing a gentle patina that actually improves its appearance over the years of use.
Our wool collection includes:
Perfect for: Period properties, Victorian and Edwardian homes, luxury renovations, traditional interiors, and anyone who wants the very best.

Sisal is nature's most practical and stylish choice for busy family homes. Exceptionally hardwearing, naturally antistatic, and with a distinctive texture that adds warmth and character.
Sisal readily accepts vegetable dyes, creating beautiful colour options that complement contemporary and natural interiors perfectly.
Perfect for: Family homes, pet-friendly households, high-traffic staircases, contemporary designs, and eco-conscious homeowners.

We also work with jute, seagrass, Unnatural Flooring and coir for stair runners, each with their own character and performance profile.
Come into the showroom at Amerton Farm ST18 0LA and we'll show you the differences in person so you can choose with confidence.
The edge finish is what frames your stair runner and elevates it from a piece of carpet to a piece of craftsmanship. It's the border that defines the edge, adds the decorative detail, and ties the whole look together. At Bestbind we offer two distinct finishing options — and choosing between them is one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole process.

A woven fabric tape is hand-sewn around the edges of your runner, creating a clean, decorative border with real visual impact. With over 50 tape styles available, from classic cotton tapes in dozens of colours to luxury linen finishes, leather binding for the ultimate statement piece, bold contrast edging, and subtle tonal matching, the tape becomes a design feature in its own right.
The right tape choice can completely transform a runner's character. A classic herringbone wool with a black leather border is a completely different statement from the same carpet with a natural cotton tonal edge. Both are beautiful; they say something different about the home they're going into.
Best for: Homeowners who want the edging to make a statement, contemporary interiors, bold colour choices, and anyone who wants maximum design flexibility.

Premium wool yarn is overlocked around the edges of your runner using our specialist whipping machine, creating a softer, more traditional finish where the yarn blends beautifully into the carpet rather than framing it. With over 2000 wool colours available, we can match virtually any carpet colour or create a subtle contrast that feels refined rather than bold.
Wool whipping has a handcrafted, artisanal quality that suits natural-fibre runners particularly well — a sisal or wool runner with a perfectly matched wool-whipped edge has a quiet luxury that is very hard to replicate with tape. It's the choice of those who know what they're looking at.
Best for: Natural fibre runners, wool carpets, period and traditional properties, and anyone who prefers a more understated, classic finish.
We'll bring samples of both to your home so you can see them side by side in your own space, against your own walls and décor.
Most customers find the decision much easier once they can hold the samples against the carpet in real life.

Stair rods are the metal bars that run across the base of each step, holding the runner in place and adding a beautiful traditional detail that completes the look.
We supply and fit stair rods as part of our stair runner service, choosing the right rod style, finish, and fitting method to complement your runner and your staircase.
Available in a range of metal finishes, including brass, black, chrome, nickel, and antique bronze, stair rods add a genuinely luxurious quality to a stair runner installation and are particularly popular in period and traditional properties.
If you want the complete look - runner, binding, and rods all chosen to work together, talk to us. We'll make sure every element complements the others perfectly.

Deep burgundy and navy wool runners, traditional tartan and check patterns, elegant bordered designs with contrasted edging, rich jewel tones with gold accents, if your home has original features, cornicing, and character, we'll create a runner that enhances all of it. We regularly fit stair runners in Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, Georgian townhouses, and period farmhouses across Staffordshire. We understand what works in these homes and what doesn't.

Clean lines, striking colour combinations, natural textures, and bold contrasting borders, a contemporary stair runner can be just as much of a statement piece as a traditional one. Modern homes benefit from the texture and warmth a runner brings just as much as period properties. We'll help you find something that feels right for your space rather than pushing you towards a style that doesn't suit it.

Our bespoke design service means there are almost no limits. Colour matching to existing décor, unusual staircase shapes, specific width requirements, combining materials for unique effects, if you can describe what you want, we can almost certainly make it.
Call us on 01889741391 or come into the showroom at Amerton Farm. We'll talk through your staircase, style preferences, budget, and timeline. If you're not sure what you want yet, that's absolutely fine; helping people work it out is part of what we do. We can also visit your home if that's easier.
This is the most important step and the one that separates a properly fitted stair runner from one that never quite looks right. Carl visits your home and measures your staircase properly, every tread, every riser, every winder, templated individually. This measurement visit is free and takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of your staircase.
Armed with your measurements, Carl will advise on the best material options for your staircase, including the width, pile direction, binding style, and, if relevant, the stair rod choice. We bring samples to your home, or you can come to the showroom to see the full range.
Your runner is made in our Hixon workshop. The carpet is cut to your precise measurements, the binding is applied by hand, and every detail is checked before it leaves us. Most stair runners are ready within 2 to 3 weeks from order.
Carl returns to fit your runner, securing it properly, aligning it precisely, and fitting stair rods if included. The winders are fitted on site, so the binding follows the exact shape of each step. When Carl leaves, your staircase is transformed.
Stair runner pricing depends on the length and width of your staircase, the material you choose, the binding style, and whether stair rods are included. Because every staircase and every runner is different, we always quote individually rather than giving a one-size-fits-all price.
What we can tell you is that a Bestbind stair runner is a premium product at a premium price, and it's worth every penny. With proper care, a quality wool or sisal runner will last for decades. The craftsmanship guarantee means we stand behind every runner we make.
To get an accurate quote, call 01889741391 or book a free home measurement visit. Carl will measure your staircase and give you a clear, honest quote with no hidden costs and no obligation.
What's included in every stair runner:
